Vidya Bhawan Society was founded by Dr. Mohan Sinha Mehta with the opening of Vidya Bhawan School in 1931 in Mewar, a medium-sized princely state in Rajasthan having at that time a literacy rate of 4.9%. The main motivation for those who founded and nurtured it was that education was the key to responsible citizenship and a democratic society.

Defying great social prejudice and political suspicions, Vidya Bhawan, has tried to serve the lower middle class as a small progressive school. The Society, inspired by Gandhiji, aimed at greater social mixing and women's education and co-education. Regardless of caste and community, students joined in manual work such as dish washing, cleaning their own surroundings, planting trees and helping in daily chores, etc. During meals everyone sat and ate together. Children were encouraged to be co-operative and individual competition was eschewed. These still remain the tenets of different institutions of Vidya Bhawan.

Vidya Bhawan has always focused on an all-round development of children and promoting awareness in them of their civic rights and duties. Starting in a rented building, it is now a family of ten institutions. It has stood for equity and quality in education and ensuring that all children get equal opportunities for quality education
